Photography

zambian-village-girl
This picture of a Zambian village girl was shortlisted for the National Geographic Photographic Prize in 2014.

I tried really hard to get her to smile, but she absolutely wouldn’t. So I offered her an orange if she would – and she still wouldn’t. So I gave her the orange anyway. She clutched it to her heart as if I’d given her the Moon. My translator said it was the first time she’d ever seen an orange.

Recently, I shared the story with British portrait and fashion photographer Rankin and here’s what he had to say:

“What a fantastic photo. It’s a great picture and judging by your website you do some exceptional work.” – Rankin, June 2016.
